Dr.
Wolfgang Hinterdobler
Mycologist & Biotechnologist
CEO at MyPilz, Vienna, Austria
Wolfgang’s passion is the fascinating world of fungi and their ways of interaction with all members of the ecosystems they shape. To share this fascination and make the powerful properties of fungi available for sustainable business models, he founded, together with René Lux, the company MyPilz. His research focuses on the interactions of fungi with plants, other fungi, and the abiotic environment. His studies in botany at the University of Vienna enabled Wolfgang to visit the Tropical Research Station La Gamba in Costa Rica. There he investigated secondary metabolites of tropical fungi that live in symbiosis with plants. Fascinated by the complex interactions between fungi and plants, he continued his work at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and obtained his doctorate degree on the topic »Fungal Chemical Communication« at the Vienna University of Technology. He is author of 12 scientific publications focusing on temperate and tropical fungal diversity, plant and fungal secondary metabolites, fungal chemical communication, sensing, signaling and gene regulation.

MyPilz was founded in February 2022 as a life science startup. Using state-of-the-art methods of fungal research, we enable yet unthought-of ways to utilize the properties of fungi in agriculture, environmental protection or industrial applications.
The Wiener Pilzfestspiele (Vienna Fungi Festival) celebrate the fascinating world of fungi. With an extensive program of lectures, exhibitions, workshops and culinary delights, the festival offers a unique platform for everyone who wants to learn more about fungi and their importance in nature, research, and the economy.
